This activity is viewed as part of the preparations made for the impending war with Assyria. These jars may have been used by Hezekiah for wine, oil, flour or other supplies for his soldiers stationed there.
Hezekiah was a very energetic king who also acted in areas outside his kingdom. The Book of Chronicles tells of Hezekiah breaking the pagan platforms and altars “From all Judah and Binyamin and in Ephraim and Menashe” (Chronicles II: 31, 1). This is surprising since the area of Ephraim and Menashe was in the Kingdom which rose after the destruction of the Kingdom of Israel. It is not clear how it was possible for him to act in such a forceful way in an area that was under the direct control of Assyria without any reaction from this world super-power. Because of this astonishing fact there are various investigators who claim: ‘It seems that the reform that Hezekiah instigated, according to Chronicles, outside the border of the kingdom of Judah in the area of Assyria has no possibility in reality.’313
In the last year it has become clear that the archaeological findings completely disprove those investigators and show that Hezekiah’s reforms were real. In the rescue digs that took place in Tut Stream in the south of the Carmel, a site was discovered which the diggers defined as the administration center during the days of the First Temple. There they found an ancient Hebrew seal upon which was engraved a rare name: To Mekach (son of) Amichai. They also found two broken jars upon whose handles was written: ‘LaMelech' - 'to the king’ which was common during the days of Hezekiah.314
